  • Laminate Flooring

When you’re looking to bring the look and feel of a wooden floor into your home, but need flooring which is tougher and more durable, we recommend that you consider laminate flooring. If your home or business experiences heavy footfall, this can severely damage flooring with thin veneer and composed of solid wood. Laminate flooring replicates the finish of wood flooring in a long-lasting, hardwearing, and low-maintenance surface.

Laminate flooring is easy to install, with all of our ranges featuring the click loc system. Planks fit together like a jigsaw, meaning you’ll be able to install your new floor no matter how much DIY experience you have. Laminate floors can also be installed without gluing the boards to your subfloor. By installing your floor using the ‘floating’ method, the floorboards sit on top of your subfloor with a small amount of room to allow for natural fluctuations in a room’s temperature.

What is laminate flooring?

While laminate flooring may seem similar to luxury vinyl tiles, the two are made quite differently.

Normally, laminate flooring is composed of several layers: a backing layer of melamine plastic, then a high-density fibreboard core, topped by a decorative layer that features a photographic design (usually wood or stone) to simulate natural materials. Finally, a protective wear layer is applied, which keeps it from getting scratched and scuffed.

Why choose laminate flooring?

The persistent, top layer of laminate flooring makes it easy to clean, with stains that would ruin solid wood sitting on top of the floorboards. This means that clean-up is as easy as soaking up spilt drinks or hoovering away unwanted dirt. It is also resistant to mould and bacteria growth that can accumulate in carpets or erode solid wood.

We have a wide variety of styles for you to choose from, meaning you’ll find options for every room in your home. Beech Nobelle and Antique Oak replicate the appearance of high-grade wood, perfect for kitchens and living rooms. Richmond Oak and Plateau Maple create the effect of rustic and weathered wood, ideal for country homes, hallways, and studies.

How long does laminate flooring last?

The lifespan of laminate flooring depends partly on the quality of the flooring and how well it was installed, as well as how much foot traffic it gets over the years. You can normally expect a well-installed floor to last at least 20 years, and even as long as 30.

Pros and cons

One of the biggest advantages of laminate flooring is the cost – if you're on a budget, it's a fantastic way to get a great-looking floor for very little. It's long-lasting, easy to clean and there's a huge range of finishes to choose from. Finally, it's quick and easy to install, whether you do it yourself or use one of our installers.

Laminate flooring has its downsides, though – while finishes can look very convincing, it doesn't quite have the premium look and feel of solid or engineered wood. Although it's moisture-resistant, it's not designed for damp areas and can buckle or warp from prolonged exposure to water.

It also can't be sanded and refinished if it gets scratched or damaged, but it does tend to be more scratch-resistant than real wood.

What are the alternatives?

Engineered wood flooring is typically seen as the main contender to laminate – both are easy to install, easy to maintain and come in a wide variety of finishes. Engineered wood lasts significantly longer than laminate, and as it contains real wood, naturally leads to a more realistic appearance on close inspection.

Luxury vinyl flooring is another option – again, it's hardwearing and easy to install and maintain.
