  • Engineered Wood Flooring

Engineered wood flooring is an attractive and versatile alternative to solid wood flooring. It is composed of multiple layers of timber that are glued together. Overall, the planks are much thinner than solid wood and have greater stability due to the layered materials. Generally, this type of flooring is made up of three layers and is often confused with laminate and vinyl floors due to its appearance. The layers consist of:

    • Hardwood veneer (lamella) – This is the topmost, visible section of the flooring. It consists of a thin layer of timber (2mm-4mm) which can vary in styles, colour and patterns.

    • Core board – This is made up of either one or two layers of plywood, or a combination of fibres, which are bonded together under intense pressure to create a dense insulating material. The layers of timber run in different directions which reduce the opportunity for buckling and twisting.

Overview

Engineered wood flooring is an attractive and versatile alternative to solid wood flooring. It is composed of multiple layers of timber that are glued together. Overall, the planks are much thinner than solid wood and have greater stability due to the layered materials. Generally, this type of flooring is made up of three layers and is often confused with laminate and vinyl floors due to its appearance.

One of the material’s main advantages is its durability, which it owes to crisscrossing layers of wood, which offer a uniform structure. This helps the overall stability of the material and helps to reduce any potential movement during seasonal temperature changes. If your property suffers from significant changes in temperature, then engineered wood would be preferential over using solid hardwood.

What is engineered wood flooring?

Engineered wood flooring is made up of two or three layers, consisting of

• Hardwood veneer (lamella) – This is the topmost, visible section of the flooring. It consists of a thin layer of timber (2mm-4mm) which can vary in styles, colour and patterns

• Core board – This is made up of either one or two layers of plywood, or a combination of fibres, which are bonded together under intense pressure to create a dense insulating material. The layers of timber run in different directions which reduce the opportunity for buckling and twisting.

Why choose engineered wood flooring?

Engineered wood flooring looks just like real wood, but is twice as durable due to the way it is made. It is made up of multiple layers of plywood, bonded together and finished with a solid wood lamella (top layer). It's also quicker and easier to install than hardwood flooring – you can do it yourself, or have it professionally installed. Some engineered wood flooring uses a click system, which makes it even easier to self-install.

This all depends on your taste and the effect you want in the room – engineered wood flooring is available in a range of wood types and tones. Lighter woods like oak tend to look great in kitchens, while deeper tones like mahogany can add warmth and richness to bedrooms and living rooms.

How long does engineered wood flooring last?

Depending on how much usage the floor gets, engineered wood flooring typically lasts for around 30 years or more. The durability is related to how many plies (layers of wood) it has, and all our engineered wood flooring has five or nine plies.

Engineered wood flooring pros and cons

The main pros of engineered wood flooring are its durability, ease of installation and resistance to moisture and temperature fluctuations. It may also be more cost-effective than solid hardwood.

However, just like solid wood, it may not be the best choice for somewhere with constantly damp conditions, like a bathroom. Solid hardwood can be refinished more often than engineered wood, and is also available in a wider choice of styles, although new engineered wood flooring products are hitting the market all the time.
